Ohio State PF Sean Stewart enters NCAA transfer portal

Ohio State power forward Sean Stewart has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned. He played just one season for the Buckeyes after transferring in from Duke and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Stewart started 30 games for the Buckeyes this past season to average 5.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. He also shot 54.2% from the floor while contributed 0.9 blocks and 0.7 steals per game.

Those numbers were an improvement from his true freshman season with the Blue Devils in 2023-24. Despite appearing in 33 games, he averaging just 2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 8.3 minutes per game.

Stewart played high school basketball at Montverde Academy in Orlando, where he was a four-star recruit. He ranked as the No. 17 overall player and No. 3 power forward in the 2023 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Stewart if the fifth player that Ohio State has lost to transfer this offseason but the only regular member of the starting lineup to do so. The Buckeyes have also added three players via transfer to rank No. 22 in On3’s Transfer Portal Team Rankings.

Ohio State is coming off of a 17-15 finish in the first full season for coach Jake Diebler. The Buckeyes have missed the NCAA Tournament for three straight years and now have another obstacle to overcome for 2025-26 with the loss of Stewart.

The college basketball transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, March 24, and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As of this writing, more than 1,000 players had already entered their names.

Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters. Based on the early numbers from this year, even more could follow. For the first time in history, more than half of the points scored in college basketball were scored by players from the transfer portal, not high school, in the 2024-25 season.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
