Tristan Gebbia breaks down the skillsets of Devin Brown, Kyle McCord
Veteran quarterback Tristan Gebbia joined Ohio State‘s quarterback room this offseason after stops at Nebraska and Oregon State during his collegiate career. His veteran presence was been pivotal within the position group, expressing his desire to become a coach in the future and doing his part in coaching up Devin Brown and Kyle McCord as they battle for the Buckeyes’ starting job.
And ahead of fall camp, Gebbia was asked to put his coaching hat on and give a breakdown and analysis of the two dueling quarterbacks.
“I think that they have a lot of similar traits and then there’s some things they do a little differently,” Gebbia said. “I think that Devin has a way of extending plays, I think that he does a good job there. Kyle’s been around it a little bit longer so he’s got some good qualities as far as depth of knowledge in the system. But I think Devin’s catching up and he’s been doing a great job in the offseason meeting and talking ball all the time.”
McCord does bring more experience to the table as he enters his third season in the Buckeyes program. That paired with Brown missing the last four days of spring practice including the spring game with a hand injury has made McCord seem like the favorite to win the competition from the outside looking in.
There’s no doubt that the two have talent with McCord rated as a five-star prospect out of high school and the No. 5 quarterback in the nation for the 2021 class, and Brown having the same exact status for the 2022 class according to On3’s Industry Ranking.
Neither brings a ton of experience to the table, but have shown a strong grasp of the offense according to Gebbia.

“It’s really impressive honestly the knowledge they both have and I think that’s a good tip of the cap to Coach Day, and Coach Hartline, and Coach Fitch, and Coach Dennis who have been working with these guys for a long time. You would think they’ve played a lot of games, let’s put it that way, because they’re both very sharp,” Gebbia explained.
Gebbia was also asked based on what he’s seen if he believes the two could be starters at most of the places he’s seen throughout his career.
“Yeah, obviously they were very highly touted recruits,” Gebbia said. “They’re competing to play at one of the blue-chip programs in the country. I mean you’re an analyst, I’m sure that you would feel the same way and I think that they’re very talented players for sure.”
The big question is if the talent can match the production that fans have become accustomed to seeing at the quarterback positions for many years now in Columbus, as McCord and Brown will continue to battle it out for Ohio State’s QB1 job throughout fall camp.
