Paul Finebaum explains why Ohio State is better than Georgia right now
Alabama recently got knocked off the top perch in the college football landscape, leaving Ohio State and Georgia to fight for the top spot. The Bulldogs won it, and have been the top-ranked team for a couple of weeks, but the Buckeyes are hot on their tail. Now, so is Tennessee.
But back to OSU and UGA. The two teams spent the entire season to date in the top three of the AP Poll. Plus, they’re the two most likely teams to take a Playoff spot at the moment. So when Paul Finebaum went on ESPN radio today, he was asked which team between Georgia and Ohio State he would slot at No. 1 right now. The SEC Network’s answer my surprise you.
Check out Finebaum’s answer and the reasoning behind it:
“Ohio State. And I know they haven’t played the schedule. But they just seemed like the most complete. The number one team is Georgia. They have a lot of things going for them. But the thing that bothers me a little bit about making Georgia the best so far is that they’re missing a lot of pieces that they will start getting back for the stretch run. They could end up being the best once they get these guys back. Their best wide receiver, their best defensive player has been banged up. So that’s really been the issue. That and they’re not getting stellar play out of the quarterback either.”

So Paul Finebaum went with OSU. He points to Georgia’s current nagging injury issues as the primary reason for giving the Buckeyes the nod. Ohio State hasn’t been the flashiest or most dominant team every week. They don’t beat every opponent into the dirt the way the Alabama dynasty would. But the Buckeyes are unblemished and boast perhaps the best combination of quarterback and wide receiver in the country — perhaps only rivaled by the group for the Volunteers.
Meanwhile, Georgia is also undefeated and has that 49-3 decimation of current No. 8 Oregon to hang their hat on. But as Finebaum said, it’s a banged-up lineup for Kirby Smart’s gang, and the recent results, while all still wins, haven’t been terribly impressive for their standards.
