Quinshon Judkins describes what Chip Kelly has brought to Ohio State's offense
Chip Kelly brought decades of coaching at the highest level of college football with him when he was hired as Ohio State‘s next offensive coordinator. According to some of the Buckeyes’ brightest offensive stars — his style is rubbing off on them already.
After spending nearly an entire offseason within Kelly’s system, Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins has been soaking up all the knowledge he can from Kelly and the rest of his coaches ahead of the 2024 regular season.
“All of our coaches, I think they’ve put us in the best position to succeed on the field. With Chip Kelly, knowing the offensive schemes that he’s run in the past, I know how he’s able to dial up different things not using only one but running back but also two as well,” Judkins said on Wednesday.
Judkins and Kelly’s paths cross in Columbus after Kelly spent the last six seasons as the head coach at UCLA. There, he amassed a 35-34 overall record and a 26-24 mark in Pac-12 play in Brentwood. He also has head coaching experience at Oregon, where he had a 46-7 record over four years, and went 28-35 in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.
For the junior tailback, he came to Ohio State from Ole Miss out of the transfer portal. In two seasons with the Rebels, Judkins amassed 2,725 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns — the most of any running back in the nation over that time period.

Judkins rushed for 1,567 yards and 16 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2022. He finished with the second-best rushing season by a freshman in SEC history, trailing only Herschel Walker’s 1,616 yards at Georgia in 1980.
What Kelly will be able to do with his talents are an exciting prospect for those in Columbus and fans excited for the upcoming season.
Fellow running back TreVeyon Henderson also spoke to what Kelly brings to the running back room, praising Kelly’s effect on him and their offense during a media availability on Wednesday. For himself, he said Kelly has showed him just an all new way to view the game. Both tailbacks expect that effect to be showcased on the field each Saturday this fall.
The Buckeyes will kick off the season on Aug. 31 in Ohio Stadium against Akron before beginning Big Ten play on Sept. 28 against Michigan State. Matchups against Oregon, Nebraska, Penn State, and of course, Michigan are circled on the docket as well.
