Ohio State travels to Happy Valley to take on Penn State in an important Big Ten East matchup. One of the key battles in the game is going to be between the Ohio State passing attack and the Penn State secondary, which is the strength of the Nittany Lions defense. It’s actually a unit that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has praised.
The topic came up when Ryan Day was asked what quarterback CJ Stroud needed to focus on, given the secondary that Penn State brings to the table.
“Yeah, they’re very good,” Ryan Day said. “They do a great job of getting their hands on you, and so we’ve got to do a good job at the line of scrimmage and we’re not gonna change what we do, but at the same time, they’re very talented.”

“So, the challenge is on, certainly in protection, to buy ourselves a little more time to get open. But, for receivers to get open and be physical on top of routes and wiggle and shake,” Ryan Day continued.
For Ohio State to be successful in the passing game, it’s more than just having CJ Stroud make the right decisions. As Ryan Day said, the offensive line needs to buy Stroud time because it’s going to take the receivers longer to get open off the ball. Meanwhile, those receivers need to have big days running their routes to get open.

“You know, they don’t just always play man, either. They play zone as well. When you have length like that you can cloud the windows. So, we’re gonna do what we do, but at the same time, know that this is gonna be a really good defense and really good DBs that we’re going up against.”
Ryan Day on Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s status
One player who would help Ohio State attack Penn State’s secondary is Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Unfortunately, he’s been dealing with an injury and his status for the game is uncertain and Ryan Day has been quiet about whether or not he’ll play.
“I’m not going to do any injury updates today. We’ll do the availability report on Saturday, but just kind of stay away from all the injury updates at this point,” Ryan Day said.
