Ryan Day knows Ohio State has found a building block for the future on defense with incoming freshman Aaron Scott Jr. The four-star cornerback and Springfield native was a huge get for the Buckeyes’ class, ranking as the No. 1 player from Ohio in the 2024 cycle.

Ohio State fended off several schools, including rival Michigan as well as Notre Dame, to keep Scott home. Day spoke on signing day about the importance of securing in-state players who often have a different level of respect for the program.

“You have to win those battles,” the coach said. “(Secondary coach) Tim (Walton) was a big part of it. We all were. But Aaron and his family were awesome. They were great in the process. They’re huge supporters of Aaron. The whole coaching staff was great.

“Guys know, when you’re from the state of Ohio, the best players play at Ohio State. They know what it means to be a Buckeye in the state of Ohio. The opportunities and what it can mean for them for the rest of their life. I think Aaron understood that.”

Scott not only ranked among the best players in Ohio, but also the country. He is the No. 35 overall player and No. 5 cornerback in the 2024 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Scott helped lead Springfield High School to its third straight state runner-up finish in his senior season, contributing both on offense and defense. He racked up 21 tackles and two interceptions while also rushing for 257 yards and eight touchdowns.

The talented cornerback is set to join a Buckeyes defense that ranked No. 1 against the pass in 2023. With Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun set to return, Scott will have a pair of veterans to learn from as he makes the transition to college football.

Aaron Scott isn’t the only local product that Ohio State signed in its 2024 class, however. The Buckeyes signed four of the top in-state players, including the No. 2 player in cornerback Bryce West. He and Scott will look to form a lockdown duo in the secondary within a few years.

It’s always a good feeling when you’re able to keep the talent in your state from leaving, and Ohio State will look to reap the benefits. The Buckeyes are coming off of an 11-2 finish and will hope players like Scott can help it continue to compete for championships.
