Ohio State head coach Ryan Day took some time to speak with reporters during the early National Signing Day on Wednesday. He spoke a little bit about how excited he is for the 17 players that Ohio State signed during the early signing period.

“I think when you look at our class,” Day said. “First off, I’m very excited about this class. I think that when you combine first off, the athletic ability and the potential these guys have to be really good football players, that’s one thing. But there’s also the type of people we have that are coming in this program.

“I’m very excited about this class. I think the quality of the guys with 17 people, we’re gonna expect to sign north of 20 here after the second signing period. But the 17 are as quality as you’re gonna get.”

The Ohio State head coach then voiced his concern about the current state of college football and NIL.

“I think it’s a time … you have to make sure that you’re recruiting great people, we’ve talked about that before,” he added. “But to say that I’m not at the very least concerned about what’s going on right now across the country, that wouldn’t be accurate. There’s just a lot with it. But I will say that I think, now more than ever, the focus has to be on relationships in this recruiting process.”

Day isn’t the only coach concerned about the state of college football

It’s not groundbreaking for any coach in college football to say they are “excited” about their class. Every coach says that at every school, every single year. That’s routine.

The part of his quotes that should concern college football fans across the country is that he’s “concerned” the state of college football college football.

Ryan Day isn’t the only one who has voiced his concerns about the current state of college football. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has chimed in and called the portal “free agency.” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney certainly isn’t happy with the current state of things and called the transfer portal “total chaos.”

Something will need to be done soon by the leaders in college football. There’s no current commissioner for all of college football, which is a problem in itself. How many more coaches have to talk about “free agency” and the “chaos” for someone to finally step in and make some changes?

It’s going to be something to closely monitor — to see what kind of rules are made to the transfer portal and NIL in the near future.
