Ryan Day said the 2025 Ohio State quarterback is already in the room following a national championship season. Will Howard is off to the NFL, so naturally, there could’ve been a transfer QB coming in again.

But Day, a noted quarterback developer, said what they have in the room is what they’ll roll with. Of course, this doesn’t rule out a transfer quarterback, but it looks like the Buckeyes will build from within.

That might be a good thing considering who Day will have to work with.

“These guys are going to compete their tail off,” Day said on 97.1 The Fan. “And we have some good quarterbacks in the system, and, you know, I shared with all of them that you know now, this was the week leading up to the national championship game that you know you had an opportunity to watch. And so you got to really utilize that, because that’s exactly what we’re looking for in a leader here at quarterback.

“So when you guys come back in about two weeks, you gotta look different, you gotta walk different, you gotta act different, because now you’re fighting to become the starting quarterback at Ohio State. We have some really talented guys in that room, and, you know, looking forward to see what the competition brings.”

Julian Sayin, Lincoln Keinholz and five-star freshman Tavien St. Clair are the expected quarterbacks on the roster. The general assumption is Sayin will get the nod as the starting QB in 2025.

St. Clair could push for playing time if not the job based on his talent though.

WR Jeremiah Smith is back so he’ll make life easy for whoever is throwing the football. And as Day credited OC Chip Kelly for the offensive bump this year, the system is in good hands.

So long as Kelly remains at Ohio State.

“Very excited to see, you know, a big smile on his face after the game,” Day said of Kelly. “You know, for him to come and leave the head coaching position, to come work with me meant a lot, because he’s obviously someone who’s a mentor to me, and certainly would not be where I am without him, and he has just a great feel for the game. He really helped me this year (and I) spent more time outside of the quarterback room.

“Certainly I was involved very much with the offense, but it allowed me to spread out a little bit and spend more time with the guys on defense, again, not as much as I’d like to, but still enough to just bounce in and out. And I think it brought us all together.”
