Ryan Day says he would like to get Devin Brown 'meaningful snaps' against Indiana
Kyle McCord will get the first snaps for Ohio State this season when the Buckeyes take on Indiana in Week 1. Ryan Day announced McCord as the starter on Tuesday, but added Devin Brown will also get some reps in the season opener.
How many reps, though, is yet to be seen. However, Day said the plan isn’t for Brown to just get garbage time minutes if the game gets out of hand. He’ll see some “meaningful” action, Day confirmed in his press conference.
Of course, he and the staff will still see how practice goes in the days leading up to the game. But his plan is for both quarterbacks to see the field.
“I mean, as I sit here right now, that’s what I’d like to do,” Day said. “I’d like to get him in the game and meaningful snaps and let them play. Now, we’ve still got Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, practice here and we’ll keep tabs on how that goes. I assume that they’ll continue to work the way they’ve worked and prepare the way they’ve done that and run the plays that we’re gonna run in a game at a high level.
“If something were to change, then we’ll make an adjustment from there. But yeah, I like to do that.”

Ryan Day: Devin Brown ‘deserves to play’ vs Indiana
McCord has the most experience of the two quarterbacks, attempting 58 passes across two years behind CJ Stroud. Brown, meanwhile, has only appeared in two games and hasn’t yet thrown a pass at the collegiate level.
Ultimately, though, Day is going with the experienced McCord to start. But it’ll still mark a first for him in his coaching career. He’s never played two quarterbacks, normally opting to ride with one QB the whole way. That means he’ll have to make some adjustments, as well.
Still, he has confidence in both players to play well when their number is called.
“I think that’s significant that we have two guys we feel confident playing in a game. This is something that’s a little unchartered territory for me. But you just go on what you see every day in practice,” Day said. “And I think that Kyle’s consistency the last couple of weeks has allowed him to be the starter. He deserves that. But I also think Devin deserves to play in the game, as well. So how much, all that? That’s still to be determined. But we’ve at least come up with that conclusion here.”
