Ryan Day evaluates Devin Brown's performance on Day 1 of spring practice
Spring has sprung and so has football practice for the Ohio State Buckeyes. One thing that even coming into spring was obvious was that, this season, the Buckeyes are loaded with options at quarterback. That includes three newcomers, with Devin Brown being the key returning quarterback.
Now, with practice underway, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day shared his evaluation of where Devin Brown currently stands with members of the media.
“I was impressed with how he practiced today,” Ryan Day said. “He had a good demeanor. He had that same conviction out at practice that he shared with you guys the past couple of days. So, if he keeps building like that, I mean he’s gonna have a hell of a spring.”
Going into 2023, Kyle McCord won Ohio State’s quarterback competition, with Devin Brown becoming the backup. Still, Brown played at times, often as a running threat for the Buckeyes offense. He ended the season with six games played. In that time, he completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 23 yards on 22 carries and another touchdown.
Coming to Ohio State in the Class of 2022, Devin Brown was a five-star recruit, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the fifth-ranked quarterback and 31st-ranked player overall in that class.

Still, after Kyle McCord transferred to Syracuse, Will Howard transferred in from Kansas State. Now, many fans expect him to become Ohio State’s starter. On top of that, Ohio State added two more well regarded prospects in the 2024 cycle. Air Noland, a four-star recruit, signed with the Buckeyes. Then, after Nick Saban‘s retirement, Julian Sayin, a five-star recruit, left Alabama for Ohio State.
Because of how deep and talented the quarterback room at Ohio State has become, there are those who have speculated that it might lead to Devin Brown transferring. However, with a competition at quarterback this spring, Brown has remained in the mix for the Buckeyes.
Devin Brown has strong response to speculation about him transferring
Devin Brown has heard rumors that he might transfer amid heavy competition at the quarterback position. However, he recently pushed back against that idea.
“I think people are cowards. I think people have this thought in their own head that I’m gonna leave and I’m a quitter but that’s never been me,” Brown said.
“They don’t know sh*t,” Brown also added.
