Ohio State Buckeyes offensive lineman Luke Montgomery came to the team as a tackle. However, this spring, head coach Ryan Day is having him work at guard instead of tackle.

While speaking to the media, Day explained his decision to cross-train Montgomery at multiple positions on the offensive line during spring practice, with key components being his skillset and Ohio State’s needs on offense.

“Well, he’s very athletic,” Ryan Day said. “He’s somebody who, to me, is skilled in a lot of areas, making the transition to the offensive line here in the last couple of years. We think he’s got a very, very high ceiling and he’s got a list of things, just like everybody has, that he’s gonna work on this offseason.”

Luke Montgomery came to Ohio State as a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023. He was also the 89th-ranked player nationally. On top of that, he was the second-ranked player in the state of Ohio. As a high school player, Montgomery was named All-Northwest District and All-Ohio by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

“He played tackle last year and did some good things, and we think he can still play some tackle, but we also really want to look at him at guard. One, because that’s sort of an open spot right now. Then, two, we also think with his quickness, he can get on guys quickly and he can bend. That’s very, very important at that position. So, with some of the schemes we’re gonna be running, we think he has the skillset in order to do it,” Day said.

“Now, he just needs the reps to be able to go prove he can do it. I think we’ll come up for air after spring’s over and figure out what kind of progress has been made, evaluate it, and then go from there.”

Ryan Day evaluated Devin Brown

There is going to be a quarterback competition at Ohio State where Devin Brown is the only returning quarterback competing for the job. He’s someone who Ryan Day broke down after a day of spring practice.

“I was impressed with how he practiced today,” Ryan Day said. “He had a good demeanor. He had that same conviction out at practice that he shared with you guys the past couple of days. So, if he keeps building like that, I mean he’s gonna have a hell of a spring.”
