Ryan Day gives update on Devin Brown injury entering Week 10
Backup Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown missed the Wisconsin game with an injury. Now, as he works to get back into the lineup, head coach Ryan Day shared an update on his status entering Week 10.
Day explained that Brown is getting ready to return to practice this week, but wasn’t able to give any details about that return or explain what it meant for this upcoming week when Ohio State takes on Rutgers.
“It’s hard for me to talk specifics, but we’re expecting Devin to practice today,” Ryan Day said. “In what capacity? We’ll see. But we’re gonna see him out there today.”
Devin Brown was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. This season, he has played in five games. Brown has thrown for 197 yards and two touchdowns in those games. He has also rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Ohio State began introducing a package for backup quarterback Devin Brown during the Buckeyes’ win over Purdue. Ryan Day liked that package in particular because of how good a runner Brown is, which changes the numbers for the offense.
“When you get down in those types of situations, the numbers start to work against you on offense,” Day said. “When you add the quarterback into it, it can change those numbers. The great thing about Devin is he can throw the ball well. You see the throw he made to Brandon [Innis] at the end of the game. So he’s not just a running quarterback. However, he is big and strong and athletic and competitive.”

It was in that extended package that Devin Brown was injured against Penn State. He, in turn, missed the Wisconsin game. His return to practice is certainly a positive sign but with Day not making it clear how involved he’ll be in practice, his status moving forward is still up in the air.
Ryan Day reveals Ohio State’s backup quarterback plan
With Devin Brown injured, Ryan Day explained what the plan is behind starting quarterback Kyle McCord for the Buckeyes.
“Tristan [Gebbia] has experience, the other, I think they might be five or six years apart, talk about different guys. But I think you know where those guys are, one’s a more experienced guy, one is a younger guy that we think has a really bright future here. So, both are at different spots in their career and we’ll kind of see how this week goes,” Day said.
“Devin’s been getting the majority of the reps with the twos, so those guys haven’t really got a ton or reps. We do practice on Sunday afterwards and allow the younger guys to get reps so that’s where Lincoln’s got a bunch of those reps. I think he’s done a great job of staying engaged, Tristan’s done a great job in his role, but now that role’s gonna change this week. So we’ll see how the week goes and who knows, maybe they both will have an opportunity.”
