Ryan Day shares where Kyle McCord, Devin Brown need more growth
Ryan Day revealed where Kyle McCord and Devin Brown needed more growth as quarterbacks. Although Brown didn’t play in the Ohio State spring game, McCord looked pretty solid.
The head coach complimented the strong arms of both signal callers. McCord might have the edge in the battle due to more experience, but Day noted both quarterbacks should see improvement in drop back passing.
Either way it seems like both, especially McCord, can make all of the throws.
“Yeah, I mean, I think Kyle and Devin both have strong arms,” Day said. “They can make that feel throw you know, when you’re playing against drop-eight and you’re playing against zone coverage like that. They’re gonna drop pretty hard and we relied a little bit on drop back pass, once you get to drop back pass, you’re seeing those guys drop into the zones and then you have to really negotiate the zones.
“I thought when we did call a couple of the play actions and the RPO at the end there were you know, guys are down the line of scrimmage and create more that run past conflict. It opened up some more windows. But I think Kyle can do all of those we’ve seen. We’ve seen him do that. And where he can make all those throws, he can handle play action, he can handle RPO, he can handle drop back passes, he can make the field throws, so he definitely has the skill set.”

Day is no closer to naming a starter, but saw some good things to wrap up spring from McCord, among the quarterbacks. Perhaps McCord working with offensive coordinator Brian Hartline even more helps the entire offense.
“I think what you saw in the game was similar to what you’ve seen in practice, some good things, some things that you’d like to see a little bit better,” Day said. “But (Kyle is) growing. I think that the picture sometimes was clean, other times not as clean. I think when Marvin (Harrison Jr.) only played a couple of drives there and then he was out and certainly not having Emeka (Egbuka) and Julian (Fleming affected things). You saw there were some sparks. I thought the throw to Carnell (Tate) was an excellent one.
“But, you know, there’s stuff that he wants to improve on. So we’ll get on to film and figure out what that was and some of it’s hard out there because there’s so much going on, and it’s going fast because you’re calling it back and forth. So you know, overall 15 practices and there was improvement there.”
