Ryan Day: Kyle McCord is onto the next challenge after big moment against Notre Dame
Ohio State QB Kyle McCord entered the bye week with a ton of momentum after his performance at Notre Dame. Now, as the Buckeyes return to the field, though, Ryan Day doesn’t want his QB1 getting too ahead of himself just yet.
Day spoke positively of McCord’s outing against the Irish during his press conference on Tuesday. Still, with that 17-14 victory as well as their week off now gone, he wants McCord to get back in the lab just like the rest of his teammates in order to build off that win in South Bend.
“There was a lot of good things in the game. Certainly, finishing the way it happened,” said Day. “But now it’s on to Maryland, bigger challenges ahead. We’ve got a lot of football ahead.
“He’s got to grow, he’s got to get better in a lot of different areas just like everybody else.”
You might wonder just how impactful McCord’s stat line was against Notre Dame considering he threw for his lowest completion rate of the season along with no touchdowns or interceptions. However, it was how he positioned them that was so big for the Buckeyes.
McCord threw career highs in completions (21) and attempts (37) which, in turn, helped Ohio State drive when they needed to and, ultimately, put them in position to score enough points to win at the very, very end.
With that said, with that outcome nearly two weeks in the past, it’s now on to the next thing in Day’s mind. That starts with corrections, including ones from McCord, as they prep to open league play this weekend against an undefeated Terrapin squad.
“It’s good to get that experience but I mean we all need to be more efficient,” said Day. “We need to finish drives off better. There’s a lot of plays he wishes he had back the other night but now we’re moving forward.

“We’re after the bye week, we addressed all of those things, and, now, the focus is on Maryland.”
McCord: Ohio State proved people wrong, ourselves right in Notre Dame win
Ohio State took care of business in one of the most highly anticipated college football games of the entire season, defeating Notre Dame on the road 17-14 on the road.
Many doubted the Buckeyes ahead of the matchup, with the comments specifically by former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz grabbing the attention of Ryan Day who gave a fiery post-game interview after the win.
Buckeye QB Kyle McCord was asked about his head coach’s emotion following the game. He touched on his team silencing their critics after he helped lead their game-winning drive.
“I think that’s definitely the most animated I’ve ever seen him and rightfully so,” McCord said. “People were taking shots at him, taking shots at the team that weren’t true.
“I think we did a good job of just kind of staying quiet. But that was definitely fuel to the fire. I’d be lying if we said that didn’t bother us. I think we came out here and I think we proved a lot of people wrong. But the bigger thing is I think we proved ourselves right,” McCord added.
