Ryan Day says Ohio State has had growth in play-calling
Ryan Day acknowledged growth Ohio State had in play-calling. The head coach was confident in the direction of the offense in 2023.
Brian Hartline was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2023 campaign. Although he had his off-the-field issues in April.
Regardless, it’s all systems go for Day, play-calling and the Ohio State offense.
“Today, we didn’t really do much signaling,” Day said after the spring game. “We just kind of huddled and they kind of relayed the call in and there was back and forth on the headset. And so there’s been some growth areas well through 15 practices. We’ve had different times where we were able to get into some movement situations where both sides were able to call it off the call sheet, not just scripted. So that was great. And that’s what happened today as well.
“So we’ll look at it and evaluate it and you know, keep working at it. And see how it goes in the fall, long way to the fall. But it’s good for us, it’s healthy for everybody to go through this and it’s everybody on the offensive side of the ball as well. You know, coming up with a game plan, coming up with plays and then installing them, then putting them on the field is more than just play calling. And I think that’s where you continue to grow and guys are in new positions. You learn and there’s only one way to do it. That’s to actually get out there and physically go through it.”
Ryan Day breaks down Ohio State quarterbacks
As Day said, the play-calling has to improve with a new quarterback operating the system. Surely there’s been growth in all facets for Ohio State.

Michigan vs. MSU fight
Big Ten will not punish Wolverines or Spartans following the end-of-game fight on Saturday.
But without C.J. Stroud, one of Kyle McCord, Devin Brown or Tristan Gebbia will take over come the fall.
“I think what you saw in the game was similar to what you’ve seen in practice, some good things, some things that you’d like to see a little bit better,” Day said. “But (Kyle is) growing. I think that the picture sometimes was clean, other times not as clean. I think when Marvin (Harrison Jr.) only played a couple of drives there and then he was out and certainly not having Emeka (Egbuka) and Julian (Fleming affected things). You saw there were some sparks. I thought the throw to Carnell (Tate) was an excellent one.
“But, you know, there’s stuff that he wants to improve on. So we’ll get on to film and figure out what that was and some of it’s hard out there because there’s so much going on, and it’s going fast because you’re calling it back and forth. So you know, overall 15 practices and there was improvement there.”
