Ohio State was without starting running back TreVeyon Henderson against Rutgers on Saturday as the sophomore was a late scratch in warmups. After the game, head coach Ryan Day was generally mum on what happened, but seemed generally optimistic that Henderson will be back sooner rather than later.

It was a lingering issue from the week prior, Day said, but something the Ohio State coaches didn’t think would keep Henderson out. When it was hampering him in warmups, they made the late decision to sit him out for the game — a fine call as Ohio State romped to a 49-10 win with Miyan Williams starring at running back.

“Yeah we certainly didn’t expect that to happen, going in. But just struggled in warmups. So we were expecting him to play — he practiced this week. So it showed up, and kind of did linger from last week, but we were kind of surprised he wasn’t able to make it. And so we had to go with Miyan,” Day said.

With Henderson a late scratch, Williams got the start at running back for Ohio State and did more than just pick up the slack.

Williams carried the ball 21 times for 189 yards and tied the Ohio State single-game rushing touchdown record with five. Not a bad days work, especially considering he placed himself in a record book with the likes of J.K. Dobbins, Ezekiel Elliott, Maurice Clarett, Archie Griffin and Eddie George.

Day offered some prior info on Henderson at halftime versus Rutgers

Ohio State had notably been without Henderson in its matchup with Rutgers this Saturday. With no known injuries or ailments during the week leading in to the game, he was a late game-time decision, according to Ohio State athletics.

Apparently, Henderson picked up a minor injury during pregame warmups and was seen on the sideline in uniform but without his helmet throughout the first half. At halftime, head coach Ryan Day offered a little bit of insight into the running back’s situation.

“It’s nothing big, it’s just we’ve gotta be sure if we’re going to put him in the game. We weren’t sure, something had kind of come up in pregame so we’re going to be careful,” Day said to Big Ten Network’s Rick Pizzo.

In lieu of Henderson being available, Ohio State has turned to his backfield running mate, Miyan Williams, to great success. Williams carried 15 times for 91 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.
