It’s a moment Ryan Day has been waiting for since being hired at Ohio State. Monday’s night win against Notre Dame means he is a national champion, earning the program’s ninth title. Day has been one of the more scrutinized head coaches in the sport but is now at the mountaintop.

As is tradition after winning a football championship, Day received a Gatorade shower from his players. The moment came as Notre Dame was running the final play of the game. Day was quite juiced up before the shower came down, delivered by Josh Fryar and Carson Hinzman.

Likely a moment Day would not trade for the entire world. At long last, a massive burden is lifted off his shoulders and potentially washed away by the Gatorade.

You can check out the full moment, including the winning call from ESPN’s Chris Fowler, here.

This has been the moment Ohio State has been building toward since losing to Michigan on Nov. 30. Everyone knew the season would not be defined by the loss, still having a chance in the College Football Playoff. Four games later, they are national champions after going through a gauntlet of a stretch.

Will Howard praises Chip Kelly for game-sealing playcall, winning Ohio State national championship

A comeback attempt from Notre Dame essentially ended when Will Howard connected with Jeremiah Smith for a 56-yard reception on 3rd and 11. Ohio State saw a one-on-one matchup on the outside, leaving Smith all alone. All Howard had to do was make the throw — he executed and Ohio State are now national champions.

Howard was asked about the moment by ESPN’s Rece Davis after the game, giving a hilarious NSFW response. He gave offensive coordinator Chip Kelly a ton of credit for making the play call in that moment. It would have been easy to hand the ball off and trust the defense but Ohio State went for the kill shot.

“Man, they were running man coverage,” Howard said. “I said ‘Hey, I’m going to go let this thing loose for No. 4 and let him make a play on it.’ That was an unbelievable play, unbelievable play call, man. It took some nuts to call that. So, that was a fitting way to end it.”
