Ryan Day updates where Devin Brown stands in quarterback battle
For the second season in a row, head coach Ryan Day is overseeing a quarterback battle at Ohio State. Once again, Devin Brown is among the quarterbacks competing for that job.
Recently, Day updated where Brown stands in that battle. In particular, he’s happy with the experience that Brown is now able to bring to the offense.
“He’s now into year three and a lot of the things that we’re doing is still what we’ve done in the past,” Ryan Day said. “So, he probably feels the most comfortable out there with the offense, and you see that.”
Last season, Kyle McCord beat out Devin Brown for the starting job. However, he ended up transferring following the season to Syracuse. Ohio State then added Will Howard from the Transfer Portal while two very talented freshmen joined the program in Julian Sayin and Air Noland.
For his part, Devin Brown came to Ohio State as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He clearly has the talent. Now, Ryan Day just wants him to become a more consistent quarterback for the Buckeyes.
“The big thing with him is just being as consistent as he possibly can. Keep the offense moving because he certainly has the ability and definitely flashes.”
Devin Brown has seen action in eight games during his college career and took a redshirt during his freshman season. In that limited playing time, he’s completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He also has a rushing touchdown.

Amid the competition, Ryan Day has also shared that he’s happy with the quarterbacks but isn’t closing in on making a decision.
“No, I don’t think we’ve narrowed it down,” Day said. “But you’re seeing guys make certain plays and certain things that are showing up in practice. As we start to get into some of the movement stuff and you get into situational things, you’re starting to just see commonalities. A lot of these guys bring great things to the table. Each guy brings either an experience or a skill set that’s different from the others.”
C.J. Stroud offers advice to Will Howard, Devin Brown in quarterback competition
Amid the quarterback competition, former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud shared some advice to Will Howard and Devin Brown in the quarterback competition.
“I think for those guys, doing it for the right reasons and listening to the coaching. It’s not going to be easy. At one point in your career at Ohio State, people are going to hate you and they’re going to talk crazy. But it’s all to prepare you for what’s next,” Stroud said.
“One thing that me, Jack [Miller], and Quinn [Ewers] and Kyle [McCord] — we all have really good relationships off the field. We all really want to see each other do well. Of course, everybody wanted to play and wanted to start. But it wasn’t out of ill will. It wasn’t like we were trying to cut each other in line… Really, everything was natural. I think that’s why we’ve all had some success.”
