Ryan Day wants to see consistency from offensive line
The Ohio State Buckeyes picked up their second win of the season against Youngstown State, but head coach Ryan Day was not too thrilled with the play from his offensive line, Saturday afternoon. Following their 35-7 victory at home, Day was asked whether or not he would like to see more of a sense of urgency from his offensive line. And to that, the Buckeyes head man had this to say.
“Yeah, like yesterday. We have urgency. We want it now. We’re not gonna wait around and say we’ll get it next week. We gotta get it fixed now,” said Day.
Youngstown State was able to get consistent pressure on quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown in the game. The Penguins finished the game with two sacks and recorded four tackles for loss.
While Ohio State was able to overcome the offensive line inconsistencies against Youngstown State, the Buckeyes have a looming matchup against Notre Dame less than two weeks away. And Day is fully aware that the offense of line inconsistencies must be corrected by then.
“There was some good things today, for sure,” said Day. “But I think it’s just the consistency. We can do it; I know we have the talent. Our guys are very, very talented. So, we have to look at what we’re doing schematically, make sure it’s not too complex, (and) make sure it’s simple.”

“All we’re asking them to do is play really, really hard and execute. Effort and execution were the two things we focused on all week. So, we’ll watch the film, and if the effort was there, then they get a check for that play. If not, and they don’t, then we’ll find out who grades a champion. It’s really that simple. So we have to identify if we’re doing the right things with them and where the breakdowns are coming from, and that’s the coaching.”
Even with the inconsistency throughout the offensive line, Ohio State was able to put up 482 yards of total offense on the afternoon. They did so without recording a single turnover and nearly doubling up Youngstown State in the first down department 23-12. Still, the Buckeyes had some issues on third down as they only converted five of 5-12 attempts.
Day and Ohio State still have one more matchup before their colossal showdown with Notre Dame. In Week 3, the Buckeyes will take on Western Kentucky, who has started the season 1-0 and is looking for their second win on Saturday against Houston Christian.
