Urban Meyer believes Ohio State will win national championship if it plays to potential
Ohio State is only two wins away from securing its first national title since head coach Urban Meyer led the Buckeyes to victory in 2014. On Saturday, the now-retired coach weighed in on Ohio State’s chances of taking home the coveted College Football Playoff crown.
“If Team A shows up, this will be a wrap. Ohio State will lift the gold trophy,” Meyer said on The Triple Option. “If their best players, the best roster in the country, plays like the best roster in the country, they’ll be national champs in a few weeks, and we’re witnessing it.
“I witnessed it in person the last two weeks. They took Tennessee, and it was, I stood right there, and it wasn’t even close. Was not close… Then the game against Oregon — it was much worse in person, just once again standing and watching it.”
Ohio State looked unstoppable in its 41-21 win over Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. In the triumph, the Buckeyes amassed 500 yards of total offense while holding Oregon to just 276.
Quarterback Will Howard put on another dominant performance, completing 17-of-his-26 pass attempts for 319 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Howard’s favorite target in the win was freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who hauled in seven catches for a career-high 187 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, TreVeyon Henderson led the Buckeyes’ rushing attack, racking up 94 yards and two scores on just eight carries.

Meyer believes Ohio State is the most talented team in the country and when the Buckeyes play to their potential, their best team in the country as well.
“Every player in Ohio State will be playing in the National Football League — every player,” Meyer said. “The offense line, maybe there might be a player or two that won’t play, but I’m sure they’ll be on a roster.
“But every skill player on Ohio State will be, I think, playing substantially in the National Football League. That’s how good they are.”
Ohio State and Texas will square off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday in the Cotton Bowl. The game will air live on ESPN. The winner will advance to the national championship to face off against the winner between Notre Dame and Penn State.
