Ohio State freshman wideout Jeremiah Smith is already one of the most celebrated prospects in quite some time. And the well-deserved praise continues to come pouring in for the uber-talented wideout. Many college coaches and NFL talent evaluators have even said he’d be one of the top prospects selected in the 2025 NFL Draft as a true freshman. The tape doesn’t lie, and Smith was simply spectacular in his debut college football season for the Buckeyes, playing a critical role in propelling them to the national crown. Former OSU head coach Urban Meyer is all aboard the Jeremiah Smith hype train, much like many across the country.

And recently, Meyer said Smith will bring home the Heisman Trophy this year. He joined the Triple Option podcast with Rob Stone to talk about why.

According to BetMGM, Smith is currently listed at +1200 to bring home the most coveted award in all of college football.

“Well, the best player in the country in maybe the last decade is Jeremiah Smith. He’s the best player. If I had to say it’s only +1200. Arch Manning’s number one at +700 as far as the betting. I’m gonna say Jeremiah Smith’s gonna be the first receiver in a while to win the Heisman Trophy,” Meyer explained.

Rob Stone was quick to point out how difficult it’s been for receivers to win the award over the years. Four wide receivers have won the Heisman Trophy, Tim Brown from Notre Dame, Desmond Howard at Michigan, DeVonta Smith of Alabama, and Travis Hunter of Colorado. But Stone was quick to qualify the Hunter selection. Hunter also won the award due to his remarkable ability as a cornerback.

Meyer noted that while Smith’s quarterback next fall is the most important factor. He also made sure that everyone knows just how important it will be for the No. 2 receiver at Ohio State to take the pressure off the Florida native.

“I will say this though, for everyone to understand though. As important as a quarterback is, that is number one. But who’s the Emeka [Egbuka] on the other side? You can take away a good receiver. You can’t take away two,” Meyer explained.

“When I had Louis Murphy and Percy Harvin. When I had Terry McLaurin and Michael Thomas. You can’t take away two because you can’t rotate the coverage. So, will Carnell Tate develop enough to take the heat off Jeremiah?” Meyer pondered.

As a freshman, Smith put up eye-popping numbers, hauling in 76 catches for 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged 17.3 yards per catch.

It’ll be fascinating to see it play out this fall and whether or not the gifted wideout can bring home the coveted hardware.
