Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler is widely regarded as the 2021 Heisman Trophy frontrunner. On FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff ahead of Saturday’s slate of games, former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops raved about Rattler’s potential of a big 2021 season.

With an improved and experienced team around him, Rattler could be in line for a monster second season as Oklahoma’s starter.

“He’s a great player,” Stoops said when asked of Rattler’s Heisman chances. “Let’s face it, last year he was a redshirt freshman. They didn’t have spring ball and he still had a great year. This year, with a full year of experience underneath his belt and another year in the meeting rooms with Lincoln Riley, he’s going to have a big year. I really believe that, if anything, if he trusts his pocket a little bit more, he’s really going to make a lot of big plays.

“On top of that, he’s got a supporting cast that’s really strong. Running backs, line, more experience at receiver, and what nobody talks about, we’ve got a better defense there at OU coming up. I believe he’s going to have more possessions to put up those great stats.”

Rattler had an up and down 2020 season for Oklahoma

Last year, Rattler completed 67.5 percent of his passes for 3,031 yards, 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed 81 times for 160 yards and six touchdowns. While Rattler showed off his Heisman-worthy talent throughout the year, he was erratic at times and made some costly mistakes during inopportune times.

Against Texas, Lincoln Riley benched Rattler following a turnover. Rattler later returned in the game and led Oklahoma to a win. Some experts have questioned Rattler’s maturity in the past, but his talent is undeniable.

“Before that he had made some decisions late in games that cost them, they were winning games late and then turning it over,” ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit said of Rattler. “I think sitting him down, we’ll always look at that moment as a gamechanger for Spencer Rattler. Because it’s never been about his physical gifts.”

After being benched against Texas, Rattler put his talents on display for Oklahoma. The Sooners won seven straight games, including victories over Iowa State and Florida.

An Oklahoma quarterback has finished in the top four of Heisman voting in five of the last six seasons. Heading into the season, Rattler is in a great position to make that six out of the last seven seasons. If Rattler can deliver a Heisman-worthy campaign, Oklahoma could find themselves in a great position once the postseason arrives.
