Oklahoma interim head coach Bob Stoops, co-offensive coordinator/inside receivers coach Cale Gundy and running backs coach DeMarco Murray traveled up to Colorado to visit Littleton (Colo.) Valor Christian four-star running back Gavin Sawchuk.

Sawchuk has been committed to the Sooners since June 2021.

He is the No. 1 player in the state of Colorado, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The On3 Consensus also ranks as the No. 79 overall player in the country and the fifth-best running back in the country.

The four running backs ahead of him are Hartford (Ala.) Geneva County’s Emmanuel Henderson, Reading (Pa.) Governor Mifflin’s Nick Singleton, Madison (Miss.) Germantown’s Branson Robinson and Lake Charles (La.) Lake Charles College Prep’s TreVonte’ Citizen.

Gavin Sawchuk is a key Oklahoma commit

Gavin Sawchuk is the fourth-highest rated Oklahoma commit after Lakeland (Fla.) five-star defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, Tulsa (Okla.) Booker T. Washington four-star athlete Gentry Williams and Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei four-star athlete Raleek Brown.

The class has seen some deterioration since Lincoln Riley was hired away by USC on Sunday.

Lubbock (Texas) Lubbock-Cooper four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie, Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy four-star defensive lineman Derrick Moore and Orange (Texas) West-Orange Stark four-star interior offensive lineman Demetrius Hunter are the three players in the 2022 class who have decommitted from the Sooners so far.

Four more players in the 2023 class in Los Alamitos (Calif.) Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Malachi Nelson, Miami Gardens (Fla.) American Heritage four-star wide receiver Brandon Inniss and Jacksonville Trinity Christian Academy four-star running back Treyaun Webb and Los Alamitos (Calif.) four-star athlete Makai Lemon have done the same.

Stoops and the remaining coaching staff is trying to keep as much of the recruiting class together as possible. He has already made a visit to Broken Arrow (Okla.) four-star safety and Oklahoma commit Robert Spears-Jennings, among others.
