Brent Venables explains Oklahoma's fake field goal touchdown
Oklahoma had a trick up its sleeve Saturday against Iowa State, running a fake field goal early in the second quarter with the game tied. It paid off, as kicker Zach Schmit snagged a quick toss from holder Michael Turk and went left through a big hole for the first touchdown of the game.
Schmit then capped off the play by kicking the extra point to put the Sooners up 10-3. Coach Brent Venables was asked about the fake field goal in his postgame press conference, giving credit to two of his assistants for drawing it up.
“Our staff (put that in),” Venables said. “We look at all those things throughout the week. (Special teams coordinator) Jay Nunez kind of oversees everything and then (offensive line coach) Bill Bedenbaugh is a big part of making some of those decisions and looking for the opportunities that are always there. Many weeks, there’s not opportunities in any phase of the kicking game. Then, sometimes, there potentially could be some opportunities. You’ve still got to execute it.
“That’s why I thought our players did a good job executing, putting a hat on a hat, taking good leverage, selling the kick. There’s a lot that goes into that. I thought our guys did a great job of executing, but a great plan by Jay and Bill.”

Oklahoma led the entire way after the fake field goal touchdown as it went on to claim a 27-13 victory. Schmit was scored the first 13 points of the game for OU, and finished the day responsible for 15 of their 27 points. He was a perfect 2-for-2 on his field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points.
After losing their first three Big 12 games, the Sooners have bounced back for wins over the past couple of weeks thanks in part getting creative with their play calling like we saw Saturday. They’ll hope to stay on the winning track in Week 10 against Baylor at 2 p.m. CT next Saturday in Norman.
