The week of the Red River Shootout between Texas and Oklahoma brings out a ton of tradition between the two programs. Playing at the State Fair of Texas is unlikely anything in college football with Dallas being a neutral site for the matchup. More than football is just enjoyed, as plenty of food and beverages will be purchased on Saturday.

At least in the past, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables claims to have not indulged in any fried food. He revealed as such during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference, saying whatever is provided on the team bus is as far as his food consumption goes on game day.

“I have never eaten anything at the fair other than what they bring me on the bus afterward,” Venables said.

Not even a famous Fletcher’s Corny Dog? According to the third-year headman, no.

“I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about, to be honest with you.”

Thousands of Texas and Oklahoma fans will pour into the State Fair on Saturday, likely not agreeing on much. One area where you could bring some peace is with a corny dog. Stands are lined up near and around the Cotton Bowl for fans to enjoy a staple food. Throughout the 24 days of the fair’s opening, over 500,000 corny dogs are sold on an annual basis.

Considering how long Venables has been involved in the rivalry — being an Oklahoma assistant for 12 years and now the head coach for three years — it’s tough to believe he has never enjoyed what the State Fair has to offer.

He was then implored by another reporter on the call to have one brought to him on the bus. An arrangement could be made and Venables says if Oklahoma does wind up taking the Golden Hat with them back to Norman, he will enjoy a Fletcher’s Corny Dog.

“My body might shut down with one of those fried corn dogs,” Venables said. “We get a W, I’m going to have one.”
