Brent Venables provides positive update on Damond Harmon after being carted off
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables had some good news for Sooner fans on Saturday following the TCU game regarding the serious injury on Sooners’ defensive back Damond Harmon. The sophomore injured his head and neck after making a tackle in the fourth quarter. He had to be loaded onto a stretcher and carted off the field. Play was stopped for several minutes and both teams were out on the field, showing concern for Harmon. The Sooners head coach provided a positive update on the defensive back following Saturday’s game.
“But I didn’t really see anything other than there was a run right at Damond. I saw him, maybe, I think he got knocked backwards. And again, he’s had a history of back issues. The surgeon that was there felt like his neck was stable and okay. But, they’re gonna do a MRI and check him out. [They’re] taking some precautions and obviously he was in some pain. An awful a lot of pain. You know, Billy [Bowman] got hurt on the kickoff return and he’ll be under evaluation and seeing what that looks like. And I thought Damond came in and did some good things. And now, we had to move a third guy over there as well,” Venables said.

The broadcast team reported that Harmon was conscious and alert as he left the field, and a more positive update shortly came afterwards.
“We were just told that Damond Harmon was able to move his arms and legs but he has been transferred to a local hospital for further evaluation,” explained Big 12 Today‘s Gabe Ikard.

The Sooners cornerback suffered the injury while making a tackle during the fourth quarter, and appeared to injure his head or neck on the play with the neck snapping back from the impact. After the injury, Harmon remained on the field for an extended period of time and eventually was loaded onto a stretcher and carted off the field.
The moment was captured by both the broadcast and via a photograph by Robert Griffin III, who was on the call for ABC in the broadcasting booth. Griffin showed how both teams stood on the field as Harmon was attended to in a scary situation.
The update that Harmon had movement in his extremities was a great update for fans of both teams to hear, as the risk involved with head or neck injuries is always severe. Harmon was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
