Brent Venables reacts to Danny Stutsman being left off Butkus Award semi-finalist list
With the Butkus Award releasing its list of 12 semifinalists this week, Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman was nowhere to be found. That may come as a surprise to Sooners fans given the impact the junior has made this season.
Not only do Stutsman’s 12 tackles for loss lead the team, but it also ranks him second in the Big 12. He’s made an impact all over the field this season with 73 total tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one interception that he returned for a touchdown.
Unfortunately, with so many other talented linebackers to choose from, Stutsman failed to make the cut. OU coach Brent Venables declined to comment on the omission at his Tuesday press conference, but he did have a ton of praise to heap on the leader of his defense.
“Danny’s worked really hard,” Venables said. “He’s an excellent player. One of the best players on our football team. He’s deserved all of the recognition that he’s gotten. He’s earned it all. His best football’s still ahead of him.
“I don’t really have any kind of comment on lists that he’s left off of, but he’s a fantastic linebacker. Has a chance to be as good as we’ve ever had. He’ll be the first one to tell you that he’s got so much more in front of him. I’m not sure if he knew that or not, but he’s got a great future ahead of him.”

Texas linebacker Jaylan Ford was among the players included in the Butkus Award semifinalists over Stutsman, which may sting a bit extra for Sooners fans. Ford has put together an impressive season in his own right with 65 tackles (10 for loss), one sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble.
Either way, Stutsman has continued to impress after leading the Big 12 in tackles last season with 125. He’s already surpassed his tackles for loss total (10.5) from 2022 and has a chance to add to that with three games still remaining.
The linebacker earned honorable mention All-Big 12 for his effort last year after also finishing with two interceptions and five passes defended. Given the way he has played this season, he has a chance to earn first team all-conference honors.
Although being left off the Butkus Award semifinalists is certainly disappointing, Stutsman still has plenty of opportunity ahead of him as Venables mentioned. He missed this past week’s game against Oklahoma State but will aim to return for a matchup against West Virginia on Saturday.
