Brent Venables reveals Oklahoma's plan at quarterback if Dillon Gabriel can't play
Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel took a major shot in last week’s loss against TCU, forcing the Sooners to test their backup Davis Beville down the stretch. With question marks still surrounding the status of his starter, head coach Brent Venables clarified what the offense plans to do if the backups are called upon once more in the Red River Rivalry.
During his most recent press conference, Brent Venables addressed whether there is an open competition between Davis Beville, General Booty, Micah Bowens, Nick Evers and Ralph Rucker for the right to take backup snaps and potentially see the field.
“I mean obviously (Davis Beville) is the one that went in last week, so we’ll have three quarterbacks taking reps this week just in case and see how the week goes,” said Venables. “By gametime, we’ll have that figured out – and I would assume even before then.”

Dillon Gabriel, Davis Beville and General Booty rank 1-3 on the depth chart and would appear to be the three quarterbacks mentioned by Venables as contenders to start on Saturday.

Oklahoma has plenty talented quarterbacks in the room, and an even with a set depth chart coaches will always provide players to prove their case to move up the ranks toward the top of the list. However, at this point it appears the Sooners will go about business as normal until someone forces their hand.
Brent Venables provides injury updates
Oklahoma took a beating against TCU, both on the scoreboard and on the injury front. The most notable Sooner to go down was quarterback Dillon Gabriel who entered concussion protocol after taking a hit while sliding down. Gabriel exited the game and was not able to return.
Head coach Brent Venables had the opportunity to give an update on Oklahoma’s injuries for the first time since Saturday but did not give much up. He said everything is “still up in the air” as far heading into Saturday’s matchup against Texas.
“There’s some injury situations going on right now that are still up in the air,” Venables said.
For now, there’s been no decision made as to who will start.
