Caleb Williams offers his thoughts on new Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables
Caleb Williams is one of the most exciting young stars in all of college football. However, he’s dealing with something completely unexpected — a coaching change after his first season in Norman.
Nobody expected Lincoln Riley to go to USC, let alone leave Oklahoma in general. However, it’s the way the chips fell — now, it’s Brent Venables team to lead.
Returning to Norman, Venables’ knows his best player is Williams. In an appearance on The Podcast On The Prairie, Williams gave his thoughts on the new Sooners coach.
“I’ve known Coach BV for awhile now just because of all the Clemson visits I used to go on,” revealed Williams. “He’s always had a lot of energy. Even to the times – I didn’t watch Oklahoma then but – even to the times that, you know, all the fans can look back to when he was here at Oklahoma. I mean, he had a whole lot of energy then. He still has a whole lot of energy .. he’s going to keep having a whole lot of energy.
“I think it was a great hire to have Coach BV here.”
The duo of Williams and Venables is leading Oklahoma into a new era for their program. With so much at stake, at least the two have the same goal — to bring the Sooners to the forefront of the college football world.

Williams on relationship with Spencer Rattler: ‘We weren’t best friends, I can say that.’
In addition to elaborating on his relationship with Brent Venables, Caleb Williams also dished on former Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler. While two competing quarterbacks can become the best of friends on occasion, it’s evident that wasn’t the case for Williams and Rattler.
“We weren’t best friends, I can say that,” Williams said. “We weren’t best friends, but we didn’t hate each other either. There’s a bunch of other guys that I’m not best friends with, and I don’t hate them either on the team. Everybody always tried to make a thing out of nothing throughout the whole season. There was nothing to be made from it.
“There’s guys that you meet all the time, or women that you meet all the time, that you’re not best friends with and won’t be best friends with, but you don’t hate them, you don’t envy them, you don’t do none of that. I’m happy that he is now at (South Carolina) with Coach Beamer.”
After replacing Rattler midseason, Williams began to show why he was such a highly-touted recruit. Now the unquestioned starting quarterback at Oklahoma while Rattler becomes the face of South Carolina, the duo is better off than when they were embroiled in competition.
