Oklahoma felt like home for Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte four-star running back Daylan Smothers. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound four-star running back from Charlotte has committed to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Oklahoma sold Smothers a while ago. It didn’t take long. The Sooners only offered Smothers back in March. He’s only been on campus once.

His official visit, back on June 3, won him over. Oklahoma was the place for him. It was home.

Former Oklahoma running back and current running backs coach DeMarco Murray was a pivotal figure in landing Smothers, the No. 194 overall prospect in the On300.

Murray won over Smothers. He also convinced the Smothers family that Oklahoma was the place to be.

“It was the relationship I built with coach Murray and on my visit,” Smothers told On3. “It just felt like home for me… Demarco Murray did a great job with recruiting me and my family.”

Daylan Smothers’ eyes are on his future

Smothers has his eyes on Oklahoma’s future. He will enroll early in January. There won’t be any visits this fall. He hopes to go in and compete for some carries early on.

“I’m done,” Smothers said. “I want to build, be developed and win a national championship soon… I think there is a high chance (of playing early) because it all comes down to my work ethic. There’s no way I’m going to let guys beat me in competing every day.”

Smothers feels promise in the new staff in Norman.

“There is a great future with a lot of potential behind coach V (Brent Venables),” Smothers said.

Smother is familiar of the long legacy of talented running backs making their mark in Norman. He’s always looked up to some of the big names.

His future coach, Murray, is one of them. Smothers has also watched a lot of Adrian Peterson in his youth.

“It’s great,” Smothers said of the Sooners’ running back legacy. “Hopefully I can be the next, especially looking up to guys like Demarco (Murray) and Adrian (Peterson).”
