Oklahoma secured one of the biggest wins this NCAA transfer portal cycle, landing TCU defensive tackle Damonic Williams.

Brent Venables needed to land Williams not just because of his on-field ability but if the Sooners fell short, he was likely heading to arch-rival Texas. Williams will be wearing crimson in next year’s Red River Shootout though, committing on Thursday night.

Not too long after the news went public, Williams penned a message on social media about the process. His relationship with Venables and defensive line coach Todd Bates seems to be what ultimately won Oklahoma the recruitment.

“Where do I start this entire process has been a whirlwind,” Williams said via X. “Sooner nation I want you to know at the end of the day I chose you because of relationships with Coach V & Coach Bates & the staff. They were genuine & I believe in their ability to develop me as a man & a player & prepare me for the next level. I can’t wait to get to work with my teammates!! You will get my best version & my best effort. I am blue collar & I love to compete at the highest level. God Bless & Boomer Sooner!!”

Venables did a great job recruiting the defensive line during the 2024 cycle and has to believe a few stars will emerge in Norman. But heading into the SEC, some experience at the defensive tackle position is required annually.

Williams should plus right in as a starter for the Sooners and hopefully have his way against SEC offensive lines.

After entering the NCAA transfer portal, Williams was rated as a four-star college prospect, the No. 70 overall player, and No. 6 ranked defensive lineman available in the transfer portal this offseason according to the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.

He made his college football debut at the age of 17, earning his spot on TCU’s defensive line as a true freshman where he started 15 games and recorded 27 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 4.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Playing a major role in the Horned Frogs journey to the national championship game while also being named a Freshman All-American by two publications and an Honorable-Mention for Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year.

This past season Williams upped his production and accolades, posting 33 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, and 3.0 sacks along with earning All-Big 12 Honorable-Mention and Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year honors before hitting the portal.
