Oklahoma WR Deion Burks arrested June 1 for DUI, speeding
Oklahoma wide receiver Deion Burks was arrested earlier this month on multiple misdemeanor driving counts, On3 and SoonerScoop’s George Stoia III reported. The arrest took place June 1.
Burks is facing DUI and speeding counts as a result of the incident, according to Stoia. OU athletics released a brief statement on the situation, saying it’s being “addressed internally.”
“We are aware of the matter and it is being addressed internally,” an athletics department spokesperson said in a statement to SoonerScoop.
Burks transferred to Oklahoma this offseason after three years at Purdue. He turned in his best season as a Boilermaker in 2023 when he totaled 629 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. After entering the transfer portal, he came in as the No. 107 overall player and No. 21-ranked wide receiver in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings, making him one of the biggest additions for Brent Venables and Co.
News of Deion Burks’ arrest comes the same day another Oklahoma player was arrested. Defensive back Makari Vickers was arrested by OU Police Wednesday morning and booked into the Cleveland County Jail at 2:52 a.m. local time, SoonerScoop confirmed. Although he posted bail at 9:34 a.m., it’s still unclear why exactly he was arrested.
As was the case with Burks’ situation, Oklahoma Athletics said the situation was being handled internally and the department was aware.

Vickers is entering his second season with the program after playing in eight games as a true freshman. He missed four games during the 2023 season due to injury, and he totaled eight tackles and one pass break-up against Tulsa early in the year.
Back during his recruitment, Vickers was considered a huge win for Venables. Vickers was also considering Nick Saban and Alabama, but ultimately chose to play for the Sooners.
Vickers played high school football at Tallahassee (FL) Robert F Munroe Day School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 83 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Oklahoma is gearing up to make the official shift to the SEC, along with Texas, on July 1. The Sooners will be in Year 3 of the Venables era after posting a 10-3 overall record in 2023 – a strong bounce-back from a 6-7 mark in his debut season in 2022.
