Oklahoma football’s perfect season hopes came to an end last Saturday when the Sooners were tripped up at home against Kansas State, accepting its first loss of the season. For Oklahoma football to get back on track, quarterback Dillon Gabriel knows that he and the offense will need to be more efficient moving forward.

“There’s 11 moving pieces and we all got to click,” Gabriel said after a recent practice. “So, you know, it’s just here and there. You know, one piece of the puzzle is not, you know, clicking. We got to make sure we’re all working together and making sure it is clicking because when it does, you know, we’re, like I said, a block away from a big chunk play, or potentially a touchdown. So, just making that a point of emphasis and making sure we do move the chains on that first to create rhythm and continue, you know, moving at a fast pace and moving the chains.”

Oklahoma football losing to Kansas State was not for a lack of effort from Gabriel. The quarterback transfer had 330 yards and four passing touchdowns on 26-of-39 passing, while also tossing in 61 yards on the ground.

Gabriel was out-gunned by Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez, though. Martinez threw for 234 yards and a touchdown in the air, and ran for 148 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. That was all the Wildcats needed to edge out the Sooners for the upset.

Gabriel remains optimistic about Sooners’ offense

Oklahoma did not struggle in either the ground game or passing attack. In addition to Gabriel’s numbers, Eric Gray had 114 yards on the ground for Oklahoma. The Sooners ran for 220 yards as team. Gabriel has confidence in what his offense can do despite the loss.

“I think that’s a beautiful thing as well,” Gabriel said. “If you look at it from positive side, you know, there’s a lot we left but you know, it’s a slim margin for error to be good to great. So, we’re extremely critical and like I said, we’re all focused on being great, not necessarily good. And that’s why, you know, we had that mindset when watching film.”

Oklahoma might not be unbeaten any longer but can still produce a strong season. The Sooners are looking to get things back on track this Saturday morning when they travel to Fort Worth, Tex., to visit the TCU Horned Frogs. Kick is slated for 11 a.m. CT.
