Dillon Gabriel has waited a long time to see the football field again. After suffering a broken collarbone to start the 2021 season, the former UCF quarterback hasn’t played an official game since September 17th of last year. With Oklahoma’s opener on the horizon, Gabriel is ready to see all his work and rehab pay off.

Gabriel spoke on his return during media last week. He says being the Sooner’s starter means a lot to him and is something he is going to take seriously through his preparation this week.

“(I’m) excited,” said Gabriel. “I’m just very confident in my preparation and don’t take that lightly. I see it as a huge responsibility on my end and I’m gonna put in the time do so. So I’m excited.”

Gabriel started 26 games for the Golden Knights before transferring to Oklahoma this offseason. After 351 long days, he will get to be back on the field again this coming Saturday. He says the moment will mean a lot to him considering how far he has come to return to football.

“I know it’s gonna be bittersweet just running out of that tunnel and seeing where I was in January to now. It’s something that I’m super grateful for,” said Gabriel. “I’m gonna be focused on the preparation, taking it a play at a time, a quarter at a time, and just doing my job to the best of my ability.”

Many expect Dillon Gabriel to have a big season for the Sooners in 2022. However, the first snap he takes this weekend will mean as much to him as any he’ll take this fall. It’s been a year long journey for Gabriel that took him from Orlando to Norman. Gabriel’s effort will finally pay off come kickoff on Saturday when he and the Sooners face UTEP.
