Dillon Gabriel opens up on his future at Oklahoma
Dillon Gabriel provided some insight into his future at Oklahoma as the regular season came to a close for the Sooners on Friday.
After three seasons with the UCF Knights, Gabriel transferred to Norman ahead of the 2022 season. He’s impressed over his two seasons with the Sooners, passing for 55 touchdowns and rushing for 18 more over his time at Oklahoma.
While Gabriel has another season of eligibility at the college level in his pocket, he also has star recruit Jackson Arnold nipping at his heels. That’s led to some discourse to whether it’ll be Arnold or Gabriel leading the Sooners in 2024, their first season in the SEC.
At the moment, the 22-year-old quarterback is simply enjoying the final victory of the season against TCU, and looking ahead to bowl season. At least that’s what he told the media.
“I try not to, honestly. Like I said, God’s got a plan for the future. It’ll all play out,” Gabriel said, regarding the noise around his future. “I’m not trying to create any, ‘Will he do this, do that,’ if I had an answer, I would tell you. But also, I think I’ve just got to trust God, and be present.
“Take it day by day, because as everyone knows, one day something can happen, and then it can be super different. So I’m just trusting it all.”

There’s a lot of moving parts that need to take place for Oklahoma and Gabriel moving forward. One of the first dominoes that need to fall belongs to offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.
He’s currently being considered one of the options for the open Mississippi State gig. The relationship between Lebby and Gabriel goes back to their days together in Orlando, perhaps he would look to bring Gabriel with him if he moves on from the Sooners.
Additionally, 2024 will be Gabriel’s final season in college football regardless, so he’ll be hoping to make his name known to NFL franchises in the process. He won’t be able to do that as a backup quarterback, so he’ll need to be somewhere where he can start.
Whether that’s in Norman or not remains to be seen. Regardless, Dillon Gabriel is immensely talented, and some team will be lucky to have him as their starting quarterback next season.
Even if it’s not Oklahoma, it could still be in the SEC. Something to keep an eye on moving forward.
