The Oklahoma Sooners have been to a bowl game every season for the last 25 seasons. Now, with just three games remaining, the Sooners aren’t yet bowl-eligible and could be at risk of snapping that streak.

Analyst Greg McElroy broke down just how much danger Oklahoma’s bowl streak is in this season on Always College Football. There, he emphasized just how important it’s going to be for the Sooners to get their sixth win against Missouri, given how tough the schedule is down the stretch.

“They are currently 5-4,” Greg McElroy said. “They have made a bowl game in 25 consecutive seasons, but the next three games are no guarantee. They’re on the road at Missouri. Feels like the one they probably have to win. If they can get the game at Missouri, Missouri is not very good — they’re reeling a little bit, but if they can get that one, they’re obviously good.”

While Missouri has been struggling lately, the other teams left on Oklahoma’s schedule, Alabama and LSU, are some of the best in the country. Missing out on the opportunity to get bowl-eligible against Missouri might mean that there’s not another win available this season for the Sooners.

“Do you feel confident in them beating Bama at home or at LSU? I, personally, don’t,” McElroy said. “So, it feels like this is the week. Oklahoma has got to get it against Missouri because beating Bama at home or at LSU feels a lot less likely. So, if they don’t get it this week, that bowl streak of 25 straight could come to an end.”

The last time Oklahoma didn’t make a bowl game was in 1998 under head coach John Blake. Bob Stoops took over the following season and immediately had the Sooners at bowl eligibility in 1999 before becoming national champions in 2000.

The Oklahoma Sooners have, obviously, gone through their share of struggles during the 2024 season. Despite those struggles, head coach Brent Venables has shared that he’s seen his team grow throughout the season.

“What do we measure the progress? From a year ago? If that’s where we’re measuring it, we’re much better on defense and certainly made great improvement in our kicking game,” Venables said. “Just look at all the efficiencies a year ago. We were one of the worst in college football special teams and now we’re a top 20 special teams unit…Our guys believe in what we do. There’s a formula for success and winning that I’ve had a long time and have matured through the years. I believe in work and believe in improvement and developments. It’s a developmental game. Then I believe in finding ways to put your guys in position to be successful.”

Oklahoma will be on the road against Missouri on Saturday, November 9th with kickoff scheduled for 7:45 p.m. EST.
