For the first time in a long, long time, Oklahoma found itself in a rut. Head coach Brent Venables had lost three straight games, with the latest being a 49-0 route against arch-rivals Texas. The Sooners needed a win against Kansas on Saturday and did so in big fashion.

Dillon Gabriel returned to action and Oklahoma’s offense was flying. They scored 52 points with over 700 yards of total offense. Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby might just be back in Norman.

After the game, Venables sent a message out to Oklahoma fans via Twitter. He thanked them for the support at Gaylor Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon, saying they contributed to the win. Venables promised a strong finish after the Sooners’ bye week as well.

“Alright Sooner Nation,” Venables began. “Great job today, man. Thanks for helping us get that W. We needed it. It’s a season of renewal. Game of its own today. I know the difference between winning and losing — winning feels good. We got a little break here and we’re going to have a strong, strong finish. Boomer Sooner, appreciate y’all.”

A ton of firsts came on Saturday for Venables. Not only was it the head coach’s first in the Big 12 but also the first against a ranked opponent. Kansas entered as the No. 19 team in the country after their great start to the season.

While it may have been a long road for Venables, there definitely has to feel like there is some massive pressure taken off his shoulders.

Oklahoma will now have two weeks to prepare for Iowa State on the road. As things stand in the Big 12, Oklahoma State will be the only remaining team on the schedule with a winning record in conference play. A ton could be on the line come Bedlam.

Brent Venables dances with team after first Big 12 win

Oklahoma snapped a three-game losing skid with a 52-42 win over No. 19 Kansas on Saturday, at least temporarily taking some of the heat off first-year coach Brent Venables following a really rough stretch.

And you could practically see the weight lifted from Venables’ shoulders as he celebrated in the locker room with his team.

With the Sooners gathered around and the music pumping, Venables broke it down in a brief dance with his team.
