As On3’s Sooner Scoop would say — Sleep. Eat. Run rule. Repeat. That’s all Oklahoma softball does under head coach Patty Gasso, especially this past season. It’s carried over into the NCAA Tournament for the Sooners as well, already well on their way to winning the Norman Regional.

Through two games, Oklahoma has won by an aggregate of 22-0. Both have ended after six innings, sending both Hofstra and Missouri home early. A run that everyone expects to end in a national championship, things are off to a great start.

Gasso spoke on why her teams have a ton of success in the postseason, saying it’s Oklahoma’s favorite time of the year. They might be tired from playing in a long regular season and ready to relax a little bit. But not without lifting a trophy in Oklahoma City first — a day everyone in Norman is looking forward to.

“They love this time of year,” Gasso said. “They work their way, they play 50 games and they are exhausted. They know how many are left in order to win it all and it’s almost like a countdown because they’re exhausted and ready to go on vacation. But they want to have a trophy as they go off to the Bahamas or wherever they’re going. That’s all I would say.”

Oklahoma has won two consecutive national championships and is aiming for a third. In the same time, they have won every Big 12 Championship available to them besides the 2022 Tournament. Gasso has built a program revolved around success and anything less is a failure.

Just one loss is on the record this season out of 53 games. Baylor has been the only team to take the Sooners down, coming on Feb. 19 in Waco. Since then, it’s been nothing but dominant wins over good softball teams.

As for the rest of this year, Oklahoma is sitting in a good position with two wins already under their belt. Missouri and Cal will play an elimination game on Saturday night. Whoever winds up the winner will have to take down the Sooners twice in order to advance.

Whoever winds up the winner of the Clemson Regional will likely travel to Norman for the Super Regional. If Oklahoma plays anything like they have for most of this season, there will not be too much to worry about before clinching a spot at the Women’s College World Series.
