When the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles kick off in the Super Bowl on Sunday, Oklahoma will hold the distinction of having the most former players in the game. A combined eight Sooners (six on Kansas City, two on Philadelphia) will represent the school when Super Bowl LIX kicks off.

One of those players is Chiefs receiver Hollywood Brown, who was on the team at OU for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. While at the opening press conferences for the Super Bowl, Brown was asked his thoughts on Oklahoma being the most-represented university for one of the biggest games in American sports.

“Boomer Sooner, baby,” Brown said. “It shows that we can produce and we’re used to playing high level football out there in Oklahoma. I didn’t even know there was that many of us. That’s a blessing.”

Brown is making his first appearance in the Super Bowl after signing with the back-to-back winning Chiefs this offseason. He suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason that kept him out until Week 16, when he returned to the field against the Houston Texans.

The receiver caught nine passes for 91 yards across two regular season games before resting in Week 18. After being held without a catch in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, he caught three-of-five targets for 35 yards in the AFC Championship win against Buffalo.

Brown is one of six former Sooners on the Chiefs, joining center Creed Humphrey, running back Samaje Perine, OL Wanya Morris, OL McKade Mettauer and long snapper James Winchester.

On the Philadelphia side, quarterback Jalen Hurts leads the Eagles to the Super Bowl for the second time, having lost to the Chiefs two years ago. He played the final season of his college career at Oklahoma in 2019 after spending the first three years at Alabama.

Hurts couldn’t do a lot of what he does without offensive tackle Lane Johnson, a former Sooner who has spent all 12 years of his career in Philadelphia, winning a Super Bowl with the team in 2018.

So no matter which team comes out the victor Sunday, some former Sooners will be getting their rings for the first time. That could be Brown and the Chiefs, who are looking to become the first team in NFL history to threepeat, or perhaps Hurts finally breaks through for his first championship.

We’ll find out when the game kicks off at 5:30 p.m. CT in New Orleans.
