The Oklahoma Sooners (11-7) had a different defensive effort in the second half of a 72-56 loss to rival Oklahoma State (10-8).

Forward Jalen Hill was critical of the team’s performance in the second half, but said it started with him. Oklahoma was outscored 48-26 in the second half after leading by four going into the break.

It was a stark contrast to the first half where the Sooners gave up just 24 points.

“I think our defense really, we came out and just couldn’t get a single stop,” Hill said. “That’s on me. I just gotta be a better leader out there and pride ourselves in those first four minutes of the second half and just gather the team and just make us play better. Really.”

Hill was asked if he was stunned with the way Oklahoma came out flat in the final 20 minutes.

“Honestly, I think yes,” Hill said. “We just didn’t come out prepared in the second half. That starts right in the locker room. We got to be more vocal in there so that never happens again. And that never will happen again as long as I’m here.”

Hill finished with eight points and six rebounds while Grant Sherfield led the team in scoring with 15 points, two rebounds and four assists. Jacob Groves added 10 points and an assist to the box score.

“I know it’s going to be the things that everyone talks about, but there’s a lot of games. Every games gonna be (a chance for) a resume win. And we understand that,” head coach Porter Moser said. “That’s what I told our guys. The only thing we have to do is go back, put our heads in the pillow, wake up tomorrow, and you’ve got 48 hours to prepare for Baylor.”

The three losses for the Sooners before dropping Wednesday night’s game to the Cowboys were all respectable. They each were to Top-25 teams in Texas, Iowa State, and Kansas, two of those being Top-5 teams. All three also all came by a combined eight points. Oklahoma was close, but just not close enough to get the job done.

“There’s still so many games left. So I’m not gonna get into this after every single game talking about the urgency of resume wins,” Moser said. “We’re disappointed that we lost. There’s no question. We’ve gotta bounce back.”
