Jeff Lebby opens up about what impressed him about QB General Booty
The Oklahoma Sooners landed not one but two quarterbacks in the transfer portal this offseason. On top of former UCF QB Dillon Gabriel, Brent Venables brought in Allen, Texas, native General Booty. He announced in May that he would head north of the Red River from Tyler Junior College to suit up for the Sooners next season.
This week, first-year offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby broke down what impressed him about Booty during his recruitment and so far in Norman.
“Adaptability, that’s a huge deal, especially at that position,” Lebby said. “Being able to walk in to a room and everybody looks at you and say, ‘I believe in this guy.’ General’s got that about him.
“He’s been put in a bunch of situations, again, it’s not at this level, but he’s a kid that had to move around, bounce around, find a way to make it work. He’s made it work and now he’s ended up here with a great opportunity, done everything he can up to this point to make the most of it.”
The new Sooners quarterback is related to former USC quarterback John David Booty. He is the former Trojans quarterback’s nephew and comes from a long lineage of professional athletes.

Booty was impressive in his one season at Tyler Junior College. He led the nation with 3,410 passing yards and 27 touchdowns.
General Booty prepared to compete
Behind Dillon Gabriel, General Booty is unlikely to get significant reps on the field for the Sooners this season. However, he’s ready for the competition and will wait his turn.
“At the end of the day, you gotta compete,” Booty told CBS 19 after his decision. “I think that’s it. At every level, you step up, you got to compete more like you’re going to NFL. There are 32 guys in the world that are starting quarterbacks. So the numbers get tighter and tighter as you progress and go up. So I’m ready to go. I have three years to go make something happen. But I want to be able to press guys right away as soon as I get up there and make myself better.”
