Oklahoma has completed the three-peat, winning a third consecutive national championship. Head coach Patty Gasso built the best college softball team the sport has ever seen and won in dominant fashion. Just one loss was on the record for the Sooners and still own the longest win streak ever.

Having a few banners in the stadium would not be enough to commemorate what Gasso has done for the program. Those in Norman want more and are going to be getting their wish in the near future. Athletic director Joe Castiglione announced there will be a statue of Gasso ready to roll before the 2024 season gets underway.

“I get emails and social media posts and people stopping me,” Castiglione began. “‘When are we going to dedicate a statue for Patty Gasso?’ So, y’all, we do things and you try to keep it secret for a while. But you just won’t let us keep a secret. So tonight, I’m just breaking it out. We’re going to have a statue for Coach Gasso next year!”

Fans have been asking for Gasso to get her own statue for a while now. They have certainly been there throughout the great run as well, constantly showing up in Oklahoma City. Now, there will be a special moment for them whenever the statue gets unveiled next year.

Oklahoma does not give out statues freely. Something truly incredible has to be accomplished for the Sooners to remember you forever with a statue.

Quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray were able to snag a couple due to winning the Heisman Trophy. However, they did not have the overall team success Gasso has had. All seven national championships Oklahoma has won came under Gasso’s watch.

What’s scary to think is that there will likely be more success for Gasso in the coming years. Oklahoma has no plans on stopping anytime soon on the diamond. For the foreseeable future, they will be considered favorites to win it all in Oklahoma City.

It’s incredible to believe the moments surrounding Oklahoma softball could get better. Even with a one-loss season, there is a desire to continue the dominance over the next few seasons.

Gasso spoke shortly after Castiglione made the announcement, saying she was “honored” by the statue. No specific details were given out by the Oklahoma athletic director. But we can expect Gasso to be remembered forever around the OU Softball Complex.
