The Oklahoma Sooners are going to have a completely new look on offense for the 2025 season. That will, notably, include a new quarterback in John Mateer, who has transferred in from Washington State.

Mateer shared some thoughts on the transition to Oklahoma while he was at the Manning Passing Academy. There, he praised both the community he’s found at Oklahoma, as well as the offseason program to improve his game.

“It’s been awesome,” John Mateer said. “The people are great. The fans are great. They’ve embraced me and teammates and coaches have really embraced me. I’ve built really good relationships. I really like all the guys. The strength test is good. I’ve gained some weight. Probably lost some today, it’s hot, but I’ve gained some weight. Got a little bigger. Getting a little faster.”

Mateer isn’t the only one coming over to Oklahoma from Washington State. He’s following his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. That means he, at the very least, won’t also have to learn a new offense while with his new team.

“Year three in the offense,” Mateer said. “You take some more strides. It’s really promising.”

Last season, John Mateer completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He did that in 12 games, which means he averaged 261.5 passing yards and 2.4 touchdowns a game.

At Oklahoma, John Mateer is going to take over for Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins. They ended up splitting time and as a team, Oklahoma was 119th nationally in passing offense with 175.8 yards per game. They also threw for just 16 passing touchdowns to six interceptions.

Mateer and the Sooners will get their first chance to play for fans on August 30th. That game is against Illinois State.

ESPN insider explains why John Mateer could ‘really climb up’ NFL Draft boards

While John Mateer is focused on transitioning to Oklahoma, he may have a transition to the NFL in his future. Certainly, ESPN insider Jordan Reid expects him to climb up some draft boards soon.

“He’s really caught my eye, honestly. Coming over from Washington State where he threw for a ton of yards, he was really productive in that system there,” Reid said.

“But I think an underrated factor about him is just the mobility. He actually rushed for over 800 yards last year, which was a stat that really caught my eye when I was doing my research on him and it shows up in the tape, as well. But the competitiveness that he plays with, I think he’s by far one of the more competitive players in the country this year.”
