John Mateer signs NIL deal with 1Oklahoma after announcing transfer commitment
Wednesday night, Oklahoma made a big splash in the transfer portal, landing former Washington State quarterback John Mateer. As he made his commitment official, he announced his first NIL deal as a Sooner.
Mateer signed with 1Oklahoma, OU’s primary NIL collective. The organization played a pivotal role in bringing him to Norman and released a video announcing his commitment to Oklahoma Wednesday night.
Oklahoma was a strong favorite to land Mateer, especially after bringing in Ben Arbuckle as its new offensive coordinator. He is the top quarterback to enter the transfer portal so far this cycle and the No. 2 overall player in the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.
On the field in 2024, Mateer shined at Washington State as he led the Cougars to an 8-4 record. He threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while rushing for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. One of the top quarterbacks in the country, he ranked fifth in the nation with 330.4 total yards per game.

John Mateer is also one of the highest-profile athletes in college football. He arrives at Oklahoma with an On3 NIL Valuation of $1.8 million, which ranks No. 18 in the college football NIL rankings. He also sits at No. 24 in the On3 NIL 100, the first of its kind and defacto NIL ranking of the top 100 high school and college athletes ranked by their On3 NIL Valuation.
Mateer’s commitment was a pivotal one for Brent Venables and Oklahoma. The Sooners struggled mightily on offense in 2024 as both Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins saw time at quarterback. OU ranked 15th out of 16 teams in the SEC with 322.6 yards of offense per game and 24.3 points on average, which led to a change at offensive coordinator.
With Arbuckle in as OC and Arnold now at Auburn, Mateer is also on his way to try and jumpstart the Oklahoma offense. All told, the Sooners now have four commitments out of the portal through the early part of the cycle.
