Oklahoma junior wide receiver Marvin Mims is one of three Sooners representing for the program at this week’s Big 12 Media Days. In an interview with the ESPN crew, Mims opened up about the key factor in Jeff Lebby’s offense: speed.

“We’re going to play real fast, speed, speed, speed,” Mims said. “That’s the only thing he really cares about. I mean, he’ll talk about it all the time. If we’re not getting lined up fast enough he’ll get on us but I’m really excited to play in Jeff Lebby’s offense. He’s a great guy, great family, he’s just great to be around.”

Although the Sooners had spring practices to begin acclimating to Lebby’s scheme (and speed), the wideout from Frisco, Texas noted that the offense has relied on new quarterback Dillon Gabriel to break things down further this summer.

“We only have so much meeting time that we can work with the coaches so Dillon’s calling people up to his house, doing all types of stuff,” Mims said. “We had a little retreat with the offense and we were going over the plays, Dillon knows it like the back of his hand. He’s run the offense for two years, he knows exactly what he’s doing, he’s comfortable with it.”

Gabriels’ familiarity with Jeff Lebby’s system is definitely an advantage for Mims and the rest of the Sooners receivers who are new to the scheme.

Marvin Mims working towards high slot in 2023 NFL Draft

Mims is still chasing his first 1,000-yard season at OU. Even so, he’s in the conversation for the first round of the draft in 2023. Last season, he had 32 receptions for 705 yards as Caleb Williams’ top receiver before his QB left for USC.

Most impressive is the former four-star prospect’s 22 yards per catch average. Asked how he manages to deliver big play after big play, he kept it simple.

“I’ve played football since I was little, played receiver for a lot of it,” Mims shared. “Just out there having fun really. I just enjoy it, I love playing with my teammates. I love all my teammates and I just love being out there with the guys.”

In 2022, the Oklahoma Sooners hope to start the Brent Venables era with a bang, which means recapturing their Big 12 title.
