Marvin Mims reveals which NFL players he models his game after
Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims is one of the few remaining pillars of the Sooner offense after Lincoln Riley left for USC. Of course, he took true freshmen studs Caleb Williams and Mario Williams at quarterback and receiver to lay the foundation of the offense he wants to build at SC.
Mims opted to stay in Norman, though, and he’ll be relied on heavily by UCF transfer and likely starting QB Dillon Gabriel. Ahead of the 2022 season, the third-year wideout was interviewed by the ESPN crew at Big 12 Media Days Arlington, where he expressed the various receivers he wants to draw from for his game as wideout.
Here were a few of the former greats he compared himself to as a player.
“I like a little bit of everything. I was a Cowboys fan growing up so I like Dez (Bryant), the way he made catches any time Tony Romo threw it up to him. Also grew up a Saints fan so Marques Colston, Jimmy Graham, even though I’m not a Jimmy Graham, loved watching him. But basically knowing who I am and seeing that in other people’s games while watching football is the best thing.”

Some high-caliber names on that list. Colston was just inducted into the LSU sports hall-of-fame. Which, as a receiver, is a tough task given how much wide receiver talent that school has had. Especially of late with guys like Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Odell Beckham and a slew of others.

Mims also saw himself like Dez Bryant as a contested catch maker. Bryant made his mark as a pro hauling in tough targets over defenders. A human highlight reel whenever a 50/50 ball was thrown his way.
Also, the Jimmy Graham comparison is interesting. As Mims noted, he’s not terribly similar to Graham overall, being a true receiver compared to the athletic freak of a tight end that Graham was. However, both were star basketball players in high school. Mims said himself during that same interview that he’s the best hooper on the Oklahoma team. Praising himself as an elite shooter.
Overall, Marvin Mims sees himself as fairly unique. He catches tough passes like Dez Bryant. Maybe has the athleticism of a Marques Colston. Perhaps the route-running and demeanor of Graham. Along with that basketball ability, too.
Should have a HUGE year in a transition period for the program.
