Oklahoma announced on Monday that Ben Arbuckle will be the Sooners’ next offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

The announcement, along with a statement from Arbuckle, provided context on the exciting outlook of what may be to come for an OU offense that struggled to find its rhythm throughout the 2024 college football season.

“Right off the bat, my first conversation with Coach [Brent] Venables got me really excited,” said Arbuckle. “Hearing his vision for the program and the OU offense, I was in total alignment and ready to roll. To have this opportunity to join the University of Oklahoma football program, with its longstanding tradition of excellence, was so enticing to me and I wanted to be a part of it more than anything.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be in this situation and I’m ready to hit the ground running and get this thing going.”

Arbuckle comes to Norman from Washington State, where he held the same position. Under his guide, the Cougars finished the 2024 regular season ranked 12th nationally in scoring with 36.8 points per game.

In 2023, which was his first season as Washington State’s OC, saw the Cougars finished No. 3 in the nation in passing offense, averaging 336.8 yards per game. That was up nearly 100 passing yards per game from the previous season. His team’s averaged 421.7 offensive yards per game and scored 31.7 points per game.

Of course, he did that with Cam Ward under center. Even more impressively — his team averaged more points after he transferred to Miami.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables also commented on the hire, singing the praises of his new play-caller.

“Ben is an extremely passionate and innovative coach who does a great job of finding ways to maximize his personnel,” said Venables. “He has developed dynamic quarterbacks in his young coaching career and sees the QB game through a unique perspective and lens, as he played the position himself.

“He’s got an infectious energy and mindset, and is a fantastic teacher of the game with an impeccable work ethic.”
