Oklahoma cornerback Mykel Patterson-McDonald plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced on social media on Saturday. He will have four years of eligbility remaining.

Patterson-McDonald did not record any stats during his time with the Sooners. However, he was a standout defender at the high school level. He recorded 62 solo tackles, 14 pass breakups and one interception as a senior in 2023. He was named district player of the year for his efforts.

Before arriving on campus, Patterson-McDonald was a three-star recruit according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He ranked as the No. 757 overall player in his class, as well as the No. 78 safety in that cycle.

Jim Nagy raves about John Mateer, ‘pumps the brakes’ on Baker Mayfield comparisons

Arriving as the most coveted transfer during the fall window, John Mateer continues to generate buzz at Oklahoma. The former Washington State standout is almost through his first spring with the Sooners, culminating with Saturday’s Crimson Showcase in place of a traditional spring scrimmage.

The excitement around Mateer has led to comparisons to Baker Mayfield. However, new OU general manager Jim Nagy said he wanted to “pump the brakes” on that chatter.

Nagy had high praise for Mateer through his first spring practice at Oklahoma. That said, the former Senior Bowl executive director said people around the program think the Sooners got it right at quarterback – although he pointed out the high bar Mayfield set amid comparisons.

On3’s Nick Schultz contributed to this report.
