Oklahoma landed another win on the recruiting trail Saturday when Tampa (Fla.) Tampa Catholic four-star linebacker Lewis Carter committed to the Sooners. His pledge moved Oklahoma up to No. 11 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. The Sooners’ class is currently No. 2 in the Big 12 behind Texas.

Carter chose Oklahoma over Auburn and UCF, elevating the Sooners’ class one spot from No. 12.

“It was big,” Carter told On3’s Chad Simmons. “I met a couple of players and they were saying great things… (Someone) was just saying that it’s like a second home basically. No matter how far you are away from home, (it doesn’t matter) when you have the right people around you pushing you every day just to become a better you and develop you as a better man. It’s overall just the coaching staff, the players to the conditioning people, they’re all just great people.”

Carter is the No. 172 overall prospect and No. 12 linebacker in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Carter continues Oklahoma’s summer recruiting success

The 6-foot-0, 196 pound linebacker is the 16th commitment in Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting class, which currently includes eight four-stars and eight three-stars. He is the Sooners’ fifth top-200 recruit and is ranked ahead of each Oklahoma 2023 commit except for Denton (Tex.) four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, Houston (Tex.) Langham Creek four-star wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway, Kansas City (Mo.) North Kansas City four-star EDGE Adepoju Adebawore and Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Lee’s Summit North four-star offensive tackle Cayden Green.

Oklahoma was originally outside of the top 25 at the beginning of the summer, but continue to climb in the rankings thanks to commitments from Carter, Pettaway, Adebawore, Green, Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte four-star running back Daylan Smothers, four-star linebacker Samuel Omosigho and Tallahassee (Fla.) James Rickards four-star wide receiver Keyon Brown.

About the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings

The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings is the most advanced, complete and unbiased ranking measurement in the industry, yet its simplicity makes it easy for fans to follow and understand.

It solves the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle. It compiles the highest-rated commits for each team up to a total based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools.

With this model, there are no bonus points for having more commitments than other teams and only small deductions occur when a team has fewer commitments than the rolling average. Unlike distribution (bell) curves, this model doesn’t disproportionately weight a team’s top three or four highest rated commits and is a more accurate representation of an entire class.
