The Oklahoma Sooners will kick off the Brent Venables era on Saturday when the team participates in its annual spring game. After an eventful offseason that saw former head coach Lincoln Riley leave for USC and many other stars follow him, the Sooners are now looking to move forward. Oklahoma is fired up for Saturday’s spring game, and the team released a hype video for the contest on Saturday morning.

Last season was a good one for Oklahoma, as the Sooners went 11-2 overall and 7-2 against Big 12 opponents. Oklahoma lost two of its final three games in the regular season, though, finishing just outside the Big 12 Championship Game. The Sooners bounced back to defeat Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.

Now, as Venables has taken over as Oklahoma’s head coach and many new faces have joined the program, the Sooners are looking to embark on a new era that will get underway during Saturday’s spring game. The team has spent spring ball acclimating to Venables, and now that progress will be on display on Saturday.

What Venables is looking for in Oklahoma’s spring game

Oklahoma’s rosters are set for the spring game, with the red team and the white team set to face off. With a big crowd and a game-like atmosphere, Venables is excited to truly get more of a feel on where his team stands entering his first season as the Sooners head coach.

“This is your first opportunity to have a game simulation with a great crowd and just a gameday-type environment,” Venables said. “You learn a lot when you’re put out there and you have to make a lot of decisions on your own. Sometimes you get exposed through that simulation. Just you find out where we are.

“You want to see all the things that you’ve been demanding all spring… how we play, how we complete, running on and off the field, playing within the rules. Fundamentals, protecting the football, no blown assignments, no turnovers… And manage the game the way that coaches on both sides want to manage the game.”
